Specialized Inpatient Trauma-Informed Program for Women
The ability to work with a gender-specific population allows for women to be open and candid in their disclosures surrounding sexual trauma and domestic violence issues. This unit is designed for higher functioning women who may have a history of trauma/abuse or have sensitive issues that the individual wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing in a group with females only (ie. relationship break up; relationship dysfunction; grief/loss). The individual may also be experiencing issues related to addiction.
Women are given the choice to attend this unit and are given therapeutic activities that can support an increase in self-esteem and self-worth. Trauma narratives are often done in this setting and shared in the group which allows for the women to support one another and give feedback.
There is collaboration with the group leader regarding topics and daily activities.
Safety is created in an intimate setting where our therapists are trained to acknowledge triggers and flashbacks. Women feel safe to self-disclose issues surrounding sexual trauma and domestic violence.
Trust among staff and the individuals served is developed by providing the opportunity to be surrounded by other women which promotes a tighter bond with each other both in and out of the group environment.
The individual will receive treatment specific to her needs which include gender-responsive and trauma-informed groups and individual therapy. Our therapists work closely with women to create a safe environment which promotes higher-level and more intense sessions that may not occur in a coeducational group.
In an effort to promote recovery and the overall health and well-being of our community, and in response to the Philadelphia Tobacco Recovery and Wellness Initiative, the inpatient psychiatric campus of Fairmount Behavioral Health System is now tobacco/smoke free.
